Broken Wings and Hope: Rescue Story of a Butterfly on National Western Monarch Butterfly Day

In honor of National Western Monarch Butterfly Day 2024, we'd like to share the story of a precious Western Monarch Butterfly who sadly suffered an injury with a broken wing. Our goal is to raise awareness for this magnificent species and inspire daily action among individuals to protect, rescue, and conserve them.

This is a precious male western monarch butterfly we encountered during our walk, found stumbling in the middle of the pathway and unable to fly. Upon closer observation, it became apparent that he had a broken wing, possibly due to the Ophryocystis elektroscirrha parasite. We carefully rescued him and placed him in a protected area, providing milkweed and fruits to help him regain strength.

Unfortunately, it is not possible to fix a butterfly's broken wings. However, we ensured he was in a safe location, away from predators, as he could not fly.

Here are some things you can do if you find an injured butterfly with a broken wing:

  1. Carefully place the butterfly in a safe location, away from predators.

  2. Acquire milkweed plants and position them around the butterfly.

  3. Offer overripe fruits such as oranges, bananas, berries, pineapple, and plums to provide nourishment.

Stay tuned as we'll be sharing more about our rescue efforts and behind-the scenes videos featuring this precious butterfly!
