Jewels of La Jolla

Jewels of La Jolla

by Wildlife Jewels®

Jewels of La Jolla™ is a Wildlife Jewels conservation program that fuses art, science, and firsthand stories from La Jolla’s unique wildlife residents. It shines a light on the “magical jewels” of our coast: every species featured is one we’ve personally encountered through EYES™ La Jolla monitoring. Some we monitored from nest to egg to first flight; some we found distressed or entangled and helped route to rescue; and—despite best efforts—some could not receive help in time, reminding us why prevention and rapid reporting matter. Many we’ve observed thriving in their natural habitats. From Brandt’s cormorants and western gulls to harbor seals, California sea lions, leopard sharks, and tide pool neighbors, these firsthand encounters power our art and community conservation—honoring the lives we’ve met and the precious wildlife we’re working to protect.

In the La Jolla Cove/Children’s Pool Marine Protected Area, rocky reefs, kelp forests, and tidepools teem with life: California sea lions, harbor seals, brown pelicans, Brandt’s cormorants, Western & Heermann’s gulls, elegant terns, black oystercatchers, summer swirls of leopard sharks, bright garibaldi, and tidepool neighbors like octopus, sea stars, and anemones. Their vital role in this coastal ecosystem—and their vulnerability to human-caused threats such as disturbance, feeding, entanglement, and pollution—moves us to act. Through art and creativity, we honor these species, share the challenges they face, and invite our community to help protect them.

Meet Our Jewels™ is an art and conservation initiative by Wildlife Jewels, celebrating the beauty and importance of precious wildlife around the globe. Through fine art, science, hands-on creative programs, fashion collections, and educational experiences, we connect people with the wonder of nature while inspiring action to protect it.

Through this program, we share the stories of remarkable wildlife that have touched our lives—some we monitored from nest to first flight, some we found in distress and helped toward rescue, others we met in rehabilitation as they recovered, and many we observed thriving in their natural habitats. Some inspire us with resilience, others with extraordinary journeys, and all leave a lasting call to protect the world they represent.
