Program Description

Wildlife Jewels® Rescue is our urgent response to the growing crisis faced by wildlife. From rising ocean temperatures and pollution to light pollution, entanglement in fishing gear, domoic acid outbreaks, and habitat pressures from expanding human populations, wildlife is under unprecedented threat. Too often, injured or distressed animals are left without timely help because a coordinated response system does not exist. Our program was created to change that.

Our vision is to build a community-based, organized, and technology-driven approach to wildlife rescue — starting in our core locations of Newport Beach, Solana Beach, and La Jolla, and expanding across Southern California. By combining trained volunteers, strategic partnerships with rehabilitation centers, and innovative technologies, we are working to revolutionize the way distressed wildlife are discovered, reported, transported, and treated.

The Problem

Have you ever stumbled upon an injured wildlife and felt helpless — unsure whom to contact or how to help? Even when rescue organizations exist, coordinating capture, transport, and care can be overwhelming or delayed.

• What if you discover an entangled pelican in the evening, when rescue facilities are closed?

• What if an oil spill, wildfire, or domoic acid crisis affects hundreds of animals, but there is no system to systematically locate and rescue them?

• What happens when an injured animal goes unseen, simply because no one is watching?

These gaps cost lives. Without an organized search, rescue, and transport process, many animals never get the help they need — even though rescue could have been possible.

Our Response

The Wildlife Jewels Rescue mission is to fill these critical gaps, guided by a transformative vision and strengthened through partnerships that unite organizations and communities. We know that addressing this rescue gap is an immense challenge—beyond the reach of any single organization. Together with our partners, we strive to expand impact and create a lasting legacy of hope, action, and protection for wildlife.

• Wildlife Jewels EYES™ Program: Engaging community members and trained volunteers to monitor, document, and report distressed wildlife and threats.

• Wildlife Jewels Rescue Crew: Building a team of trained volunteers ready to safely pick up and transport wildlife when rehabilitators or agencies are unavailable.

• Wildlife Rescue Resources: Providing clear, accessible rescue contact information for San Diego, Los Angeles, and marine mammal emergencies.

• Wildlife Jewels Rescue Blogs – Sharing real rescue cases and field observations to raise awareness, educate the community, and inspire action to protect wildlife.

• Collaboration: Building partnerships with rehabilitation groups, technologists, and government agencies to create a faster, more effective wildlife rescue response system.
