As Darkness Fell: Wildlife Jewels Rescues a Distressed Western Grebe in Cardiff-by-the-Sea

As Darkness Fell: Wildlife Jewels Rescues a Distressed Western Grebe in Cardiff-by-the-Sea

Emaciated Western Grebe rescued. Wildlife Jewels Rescue Crew, October 26, 2026 at Cardiff State Beach.

🌊💙 AS DARKNESS FELL, ONE MORE SEABIRD NEEDED OUR HELP!

After rescuing THREE seabirds in La Jolla on October 26, Wildlife Jewels Rescue Crew received another urgent call around sunset — a precious Western Grebe was in distress in Cardiff-by-the-Sea!

Racing to Cardiff from La Jolla as darkness approached, we found the weakened grebe tucked among the rocks, visibly unwell and vulnerable to the incoming tide.

With water levels rising and daylight fading, our Rescue Crew carefully rescued the precious bird, secured her in a safe transport crate, and transported her to Shalom Wildlife Hospital for professional veterinary care. 💙

🪽 This was the SECOND Western Grebe and FOURTH seabird rescued by Wildlife Jewels Rescue Crew in a single day!

Thank you to the compassionate community member who reported the grebe and returned after dark to help us locate her, and to the wonderful volunteers who assisted with the search! Your help made this rescue possible!

Sadly, these are not isolated cases. Amid the ongoing seabird crisis along our Southern California coastline, we're encountering increasing numbers of weak and distressed seabirds, including Western Grebes observed struggling offshore.

💙 PLEASE BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR WESTERN GREBES IN DISTRESS!

If you spot a seabird that appears weak, injured, entangled, stranded, or behaving unusually, please report it immediately and keep the bird in sight from a safe distance, if possible, until rescuers arrive. Early reporting can make a lifesaving difference!
