Wildlife Jewels New Year Sweep for Wildlife — Corona del Mar State Beach
When: Sunday, January 18, 2026, at 2PM-4PM PST
Where: Corona del Mar State Beach
Kick off the year by protecting California’s coastal wildlife—while learning about local seabirds, including iconic brown pelicans and the inspiring story of a resilient resident gull.
You’re invited to join Wildlife Jewels on Sunday, January 18 (2:00–4:00 PM) for our New Year “Sweep & Learn for Wildlife” community beach cleanup at Corona del Mar State Beach.
Start the year by helping clean up the beach and protecting wildlife. Together, we’ll remove marine debris and share stories of the incredible wildlife we’ve had the privilege of observing at CDM—including California Brown Pelicans and a resilient local California Gull we’ve been monitoring for over a year due to an entangled foot.
You’ll learn:
How everyday litter impacts coastal wildlife
Common threats facing pelicans, gulls, and other marine life
Simple, practical steps you can take year-round to help wildlife thrive
What to bring: a reusable bucket or bag, gloves, and a great attitude (we’ll bring extra supplies when available).
We encourage you to take photos and tag us on social media—or share your experience with us via email at sweepforwildlife@wildlifejewels.org
We look forward to seeing you at Corona del Mar State Beach!
Space is limited. Reserve your spot below.
Meet Selenite Crystal the Gull!
Meet Selenite Crystal the Gull ✨
We first spotted this resilient Gull during our December King Tides cleanup at Corona del Mar State Beach. Crystal is featured in our event flyer—and just last week, we saw her again.
Sadly she’s missing one foot and has the other entangled in a fishing line—a heartbreaking reminder of why our cleanups matter.
Join us this Sunday for New Year Sweep & Learn for Wildlife Walk to help protect Crystal and other precious wildlife from debris like plastic and discarded fishing gear.
You might even get the chance to see Crystal in person!
Plus Fishing Gear Removal Challenge
Find discarded fishing gear during our cleanup and you’ll be entered to win a Wildlife Jewels Collections, gull-inspired work of art prize
**Please note, winners and prizes will be announced 2 days after our event!
“Every wildlife is unique, and every individual matters! Even if you pick up a single piece of debris, you could be saving a life. The sad moment I witnessed a Gull swallowing a plastic knife inspired me to form this group. Please join us in our efforts to protect and preserve our precious wildlife!”
