Wildlife Jewels Sweep and Learn for Wildlife King Tides walk in Solana Beach, Sunday November 17th, 2024

What a Fabulous Day!
Thank you all for joining Wildlife Jewels® for our Summer Sweep & Learn for Wildlife Beach Cleanup Walk at Fletcher Cove Beach!

On Sunday, June 22nd, Wildlife Jewels® hosted a wonderful educational beach cleanup as part of our Sweep & Learn for Wildlife Program—and what an inspiring day it was!

Our Focus for the Day:

  • Protecting Coastal Wildlife: Removing debris—like burnt wood, nails, plastic, and fishing lines—that pose serious risks to birds, marine animals, and people.

  • Community Education: Sharing fascinating facts about the unique wildlife that reside and visit Fletcher Cove Beach—and how we can all help protect them.

  • Debris Awareness: Highlighting common trash threats like candy wrappers, fishing gear, and balloons—and how we can prevent harm to coastal wildlife by keeping our beaches clean.

  • Beach Cleanup Stations : Introducing Solana Beach’s new cleanup stations and how visitors can use them to help keep the beach clean every day.

  • Raising Awareness: Highlighting common threats facing our coastal ecosystems and simple actions we can all take to be part of the solution.

A Huge Thank You to Our Volunteers!

We were thrilled to see the Solana Beach community come together with such enthusiasm, dedication, and passion for the environment. Your efforts made a meaningful difference in helping to protect our local wildlife.

What We Removed Together:

  • Charcoal, burnt wood, staples, and nails left from illegal bonfires

  • Fishing line and bobber tangled in dried seaweed

  • Plastic fragments and bottle caps

  • Rope, Styrofoam, cigarette butts, candy wrappers, plastic utensils, and more...

Each piece of debris removed is one less hazard for wildlife, preventing injury or ingestion that could be life-threatening.

Looking Ahead

We’re excited to announce more wildlife exploration walks and beach cleanups in the coming months! These events are a fantastic way to connect with nature, learn about local wildlife, while helping to clean our beach.

Wildlife Jewels Sweep and Learn for Wildlife Fletcher Cove Beach! June 22, 2025

During our Sweep for Wildlife walk at Fletcher Cove Beach, we highlighted the distressing impacts discarded fishing gear has on our precious marine life.

Our EYES coastal monitoring team has been witnessing an alarming increase in marine mammals and seabirds entangled in fishing gear—some with missing feet or hooks lodged in their bills or legs, and others with fishing line tightly wrapped around their bodies.

Thanks to the vigilant spotting by one of our dedicated volunteers at Fletcher Cove Beach, a discarded fishing line with a bobber still attached was safely removed— preventing harm to local wildlife.

Past Sweep for Wildlife Solana Beach Events

On July 9th, we observed several beautiful Western Gulls picking up charcoal from the sand. Thanks to the incredible efforts of our dedicated volunteers during our August and November beach cleanups, we successfully removed at least 140 pounds of charcoal and burnt wood, along with 111 nails, microplastics, candy wrappers, tiny plastic fragments, and styrofoam. These cleanups have significantly reduced the hazards our precious wildlife might otherwise ingest.
