Seabird entanglements on the rise in La Jolla, bird advocate says
Seabird entanglements are rising along the La Jolla coastline — and the pattern Wildlife Jewels has been documenting is now in the spotlight in the La Jolla Light and The San Diego Union-Tribune.
Through ongoing EYES monitoring and Rescue Crew Search Scout efforts, Wildlife Jewels documented roughly 80 fishing gear-related seabird entanglements in La Jolla from April through August 19 — nearly 76% at Point La Jolla.
Behind every number is a precious seabird caught in devastating fishing line, hooks or lures — often unable to fully open its beak, fly, swim, feed or survive.
The full story explores what our continued monitoring is revealing, why these numbers represent a minimum documented count, and how consistent observation can help identify emerging threats and individual birds in need of rescue.
We’re grateful to the La Jolla Light and The San Diego Union-Tribune for helping bring greater attention to what La Jolla’s seabirds are facing.
