Introducing the Wildlife Jewels® Rescue Crew (Pilot Program)
Along the Southern California coast, wildlife can face injury, entanglement, and other hazards. Wildlife Jewels® is launching the Rescue Crew (Pilot Program) in La Jolla to strengthen responsible observation, reporting, and coordination with permitted wildlife responders.
What the Rescue Crew Is
The Rescue Crew is a trained, invite-only volunteer initiative focused on helping ensure wildlife concerns are observed, documented, and routed to appropriate response pathways.

Participation begins with an interest application.

Meet Jade — a beautiful sea lion who we recently spotted during our EYES La Jolla monitoring, with a severe entanglement around her neck. Thanks to the quick action of San Diego marine mammal responders, the lines were successfully removed, and she’s now healing beautifully.

Meet Jade — a precious California sea lion who was severely entangled and treated by San Diego marine mammal responders. No fishing line is visible in this footage from our recent observation. She still has a clearly visible neck scar from past entanglement and is on her way to healing.
Sadly, several entangled sea lions remain at La Jolla Cove. Each sighting and report can mean the difference between life and death. Timely, detailed information — including the exact location, time, and clear photos or video — helps rescue teams respond effectively.

On August 15 and again on August 20, during our Wildlife Jewels EYES monitoring at La Jolla Cove, we observed this precious sea lion suffering from entanglement. She is likely the same individual we documented and reported back on July 5.

California Brown Pelicans need your help. A concerning number have recently been found distressed along our coast, and other seabirds, including cormorants, are affected as well.

During our recent EYES wildlife monitoring at La Jolla Cove, we documented two entangled Brandt’s cormorants within ~2 feet of each other—including clearly visible rope/line. 💔
We’ve launched a neighborhood group for the La Jolla community to share local wildlife rescue resources and guidance specific to our coastline.
Last week, Wildlife Jewels hosted a hands-on Rescue Crew training in La Jolla focused on coastal birds. Using props, we practiced responsible response skills—how to recognize signs of distress, coordinate safely, and support bird rescue when professional help is needed.

As part of Wildlife Jewels' Annual World Wildlife Day Community Celebration, volunteers came together to plant 120 native pollinator plants at Newport Beach Civic Center Park, helping beautify the park while creating habitat for butterflies, hummingbirds, and other essential wildlife.

On February 5th, we had the pleasure of led a wonderful planting activity at Carlsbad’s Poinsettia Park with the dedicated 7th-grade Service Learning students from Pacific Ridge School. Together, we planted native flowers to help support local pollinators—including hummingbirds, butterflies, bees, and more—while learning about their essential roles in our ecosystem.

This event was part of our Sweep for Wildlife program from our Ocean Conservation initiative aimed at cleaning the beach and educating the community about our native wildlife, the threats debris poses to their lives, and ways they can contribute to protecting them.

Entangled Sea Lion “Jasper“ at La Jolla Cove Urgently Needs Help
We first saw this precious sea lion whom we’ve named Jasper, on May 1st, and again on May 9th. Her condition is worsening as the net cuts deeper into her neck. She urgently needs to be rescued. If you spot her or any other entangled marine mammals, please report the sighting immediately to your local marine mammal rescue team.

During our EYES monitoring walk at La Jolla Cove, sadly we spotted a precious sea lion entangled in fishing gear.
We first saw this precious sea lion whom we’ve named Jasper, on May 1st, and again on May 9th. Her condition is worsening as the net cuts deeper into her neck. She urgently needs to be rescued!!
Sadly, she has not yet been rescued due to the challenges and limited accessibility of her location.
If you spot her or any other entangled marine mammals, please report the sighting immediately to your local licensed marine mammal rescue and rehabilitation center.

During our wildlife monitoring walk at La Jolla Cove today, we encountered a troubling sight: a sea lion entangled in a gill net. He was resting close to the cliff wall at Boomer Beach just south of Point La Jolla, appearing severely hurt and not moving.

We reported the sea lion and stayed by him until past sunset. If you spot this sea lion, please call for help immediately.

Distressed Sea Lion at Point La Jolla Needs Help
During our wildlife monitoring walk at La Jolla Cove yesterday, we were disturbed to spot and report a distressed sea lion. We spotted a male sea lion dragging himself on the sand, right flipper appearing to be tied up with a rope, looking very thin and weak.
Upon returning to La Jolla Cove to search for the entangled sea lion from Tuesday, we were devastated to find another distressed sea lion—a female with a severe prolapse. We last saw her around 1 PM on October 23rd, lying near the edge of the cliff at Point La Jolla. We also noticed that her front right flipper is tagged, indicating she has previously been rehabilitated.
Please keep an eye out for her, and if you spot her, call for assistance as soon as possible.
