World Migratory Bird Day in Newport Beach: A Sunset Walk at the Back Bay, Oct 12 2025
On Sunday October 12th, we hosted a sunset bird walk in honor of the United Nations’ World Migratory Bird Day at Upper Newport Bay—one of SoCal’s most vital Pacific Flyway estuaries.
Huge thanks to everyone who joined us to explore this beautiful wetland and learn about the majestic migratory visitors and year-round residents whose survival depends on healthy marshes, clean water, and space to rest and refuel.
World Migratory Bird Day calls for stronger coexistence between people and birds—especially in our shared urban and coastal spaces. From city parks and neighborhoods to tidal marshes like Upper Newport Bay, simple actions help birds thrive:
Give shorebirds space at low tide (watch from a distance; keep dogs leashed where posted).
Reduce plastic and safely dispose of fishing line (use bins; pack in/pack out).
Plant native vegetation and restore habitat at home, campus, and community sites.
Dim outdoor lights and prevent window strikes (down-shield lights; add window markers).
Drive slowly near sensitive crossings around the Back Bay and other wildlife areas.
Together, we can make cities and coastlines safer for migratory visitors and year-round residents.
We watched sandpipers and willets working the mudflats, spotted whimbrels, saw Elegant Terns carving the wind, and admired Snowy Egrets, a Great Egret, and even a beautiful House Wren.
