Wildlife Jewels’ Seabird Rescues Featured on CBS 8
Wildlife Jewels’ seabird rescue work along the Southern California coast was recently featured on CBS 8 San Diego in a story by Shawn Styles, highlighting our work to find and rescue birds in need and the growing threat of fishing-line and hook entanglements in La Jolla.
Through our Rescue Crew and coastal field work, Wildlife Jewels searches for injured, entangled, and distressed birds, monitors those that cannot immediately be rescued, carries out rescues when possible, and transports birds for rehabilitation and care.
The CBS 8 story highlights some of our recent seabird rescues, including entangled Brandt’s Cormorants in La Jolla and a California Brown Pelican we rescued at Crystal Cove State Park after finding the bird entangled in fishing line and three hooks. After weeks of rehabilitation, the pelican was successfully released back into the wild.
Our extensive field monitoring in La Jolla has documented a growing number of seabirds entangled in fishing line, hooks, and other fishing gear, particularly around Point La Jolla. Entanglement can cause severe injuries, restrict a bird’s ability to fly, feed, swim, or dive, and leave wildlife in urgent need of rescue.
Wildlife can’t call for help. That’s why we’re out there searching.
Finding an animal in need is often the first critical step toward rescue. By searching the coastline, documenting wildlife in distress, and responding when birds can be reached, we can help give them a chance at rescue, rehabilitation, and return to the wild.
We are grateful to CBS 8 and Shawn Styles for helping bring greater awareness to these precious lives, the threats they face, and the importance of timely wildlife rescue.
